The 79th Edinburgh International Film Festival takes place from 13–19 August 2026, bringing together filmmakers, actors, industry professionals and film fans from around the world.
This year’s programme features 38 feature films, including 21 World Premieres, making it one of the festival’s strongest line-ups in recent years.
Ten films will compete for the Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence, celebrating outstanding new filmmaking talent.

Sir Kenneth Branagh will receive the inaugural Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award, recognising his remarkable career and impact on the film industry.
Festival audiences will have the opportunity to attend special In Conversation events with Ewan McGregor, Bruce Dern and acclaimed producer Christine Vachon, offering insight into their careers and creative process.
One of the festival’s biggest celebrations will mark 30 years of Trainspotting, with a special anniversary screening, live cast and crew commentary, and additional celebratory events.
Scottish filmmaking remains at the heart of the festival, with a strong showcase of homegrown talent alongside international premieres.
The festival continues to champion independent cinema, highlighting debut features, documentaries, international discoveries and emerging filmmakers.
Every screening is followed by opportunities for audiences to hear directly from filmmakers through Q&As and special events across the week.
Alongside the screenings, the city’s famous festival atmosphere means visitors can experience a unique blend of cinema, arts and culture throughout Edinburgh.
